Portable Toilets – Tips & Tricks
Portable toilets are a staple in any community. At most construction sites or community events, you will find portable restrooms. Not only do they support growth, but they also support community connection and mindset. Considering the impact that these restrooms have, it is a good idea to know a few tips and tricks about them.
Toilet Tips
Placement Matters
Where the toilet is placed has a large impact on the usage and maintenance of the unit. It needs to be close enough to the site/event and yet accessible enough for servicing. It is best to find a level area off to the side and close to the driveway. Generally, this will make it convenient for usage and yet easy to service.
The service truck needs to be able to get within 25ft of the unit. If vehicles are parked too close to the toilet, it may not get pumped out. The hoses used to remove the waste often jump around and it is better not to risk damaging any client’s property.
# of People Matter
Like anything, if the portable toilet is being overused, it will not be pleasant. If the facilities are insufficient it can lead to many issues. A lack of toilet paper, overwhelming smell, and waste reaching the top of the tank are all unwanted, but potential possibilities.
Construction
A basic portable restroom can serve up to 10 people for a regular work week. If there are more people onsite, it is best to reach out to your supervisor or service provider about additional units.
Events
Events can have similar issues. The number of units needed is based on the number of people attending, the length of the event and whether food and drinks are being served. Take a look at our FAQs for a detailed graph regarding the number of units needed for different events.
Book Ahead
It may surprise some people, but the availability of portable restrooms is limited.
Long-Term Rentals
Come summer in Muskoka, most sanitation companies are waitlisted in their long-term portable restroom rentals. Long term is considered any rental lasting over 2 weeks. If you are considering starting construction, be sure to contact your service provider 1-2 months in advance.
Event & Seasonal Rentals
If you are someone who would like a restroom at the cottage for the summer, make sure to get on a seasonal list. Calling in the spring may leave you looking for other alternatives.
Unlike seasonal rentals, it is best to order your event units in the spring. There are many popular weekends that become fully booked early in the year.
Remember, it is always better to have your restrooms booked, than to scramble at the last minute.
Toilet Tricks
Close the Lid
Closing the lid is such a simple trick! Not only is it polite, but it also helps with the smell. Closing the lid after using the restroom forces the gases out of the vent. The restroom will look nicer when you enter, and the odor will be much improved.
Use the Garbage
Using the garbage is another thing that is well known and not often followed. Keeping trash in the proper place will keep the restroom and the technician’s equipment working properly. Things such as pet poop bags, personal hygiene items, rags, paper towel and other garbage will quickly fill the unit and clog the hoses that are used for cleaning.
Flush Properly
If you are renting a portable restroom that flushes, there are a few things you need to know. First off, before you use the restroom, you will need to pull the flush lever up to fill the toilet with water. After use, you press down to flush. Without the proper order, it doesn’t take long for a clog to develop. The water allows everything to flow properly and keeps the toilet clean.
Conclusion
All the things mentioned in this document may seem irrelevant or unimportant, but they make a huge difference. Your restroom rental will be much more enjoyable and go much smoother if you follow the tips and tricks. Whether you are hosting a community event or building a new home, your toilet rental matters!
