The Challenges of Servicing Portable Toilets
Portable toilets are used by most trades people in Muskoka. They provide a hygienic solution when traditional facilities are unavailable. However, managing and servicing these units is no small feat. From difficult roads to unpredictable weather, here are some of the challenges we face in the portable toilet service industry.
Difficult Roads
One of the main challenges in servicing portable toilets is accessing remote or difficult to reach locations. Many events or construction sites are situated in rural areas with unpaved roads. These roads can be narrow, uneven and sometimes even impassible, especially after heavy rain.
Our service vehicles are specially equipped with four-wheel drive to handle these rough terrains, but maneuvering through such conditions requires skilled drivers and a lot of patience. We often have to plan our routes meticulously to avoid potential hazards and ensure timely service.
Mud & Soft Ground
In addition to rough roads, mud and soft ground present significant obstacles. After a rainstorm, fields and open spaces can become saturated, turning them into quagmires. This not only makes it challenging to position the portable toilets initially but also complicates the servicing process.
Our teams often assess the ground conditions and do their best to prevent getting stuck. However, even with precautions, there are times when nature seems determined to test our resolve. In such cases, we work closely with event organizers or site managers to find the best solutions, whether it’s delaying the delivery or switching to island units.
Liquid Load & Truck Weight
Our service trucks, filled with water and waste, become heavy and hard to maneuver, especially on soft ground. This extra weight, plus the weight of our equipment, increases the risk of getting stuck or damaging the terrain. Drivers must be cautious and ensure vehicles are well-maintained to handle these loads safely. Balancing weight and navigating tricky paths requires skill and planning.
Remember, just because a pickup truck can get into the site, doesn’t mean that our vehicles can safely access the site for service.
Obstructive Vehicles
Another frequent challenge is dealing with vehicles parked in the way. At busy events or crowded construction sites, finding a clear path to the toilets can be tricky. Vehicles parked without consideration can block access, delaying or even cancelling the scheduled service.
To mitigate this, we communicate with the site coordinators to establish the best locations for simple servicing. We have also, on occasion, made notes to call ahead for certain sites. This gives the contractors time to move their vehicles before we arrive onsite. Despite these efforts, there are occasional times when we must fail and move on. If our technicians need to wait for 15 minutes at each stop, it could add up to 3 hours to their day.
Materials & Equipment in the Way
Construction sites in particular, are often cluttered with materials and equipment. Large machinery, stacks of building materials or piles of debris can obstruct paths and make it difficult to reach the portable toilets.
We emphasize the importance of maintaining clear access and collaborating with site managers to ensure that access to the toilets remains unobstructed. In cases where this isn’t possible, we develop alternative strategies to reach the units, ensuring that our service remains efficient and timely.
Storm Damage
Weather is an unpredictable element that can drastically affect our operations. Storm damage can cause significant disruptions, from flooded areas to fallen trees and power lines. These conditions not only make it difficult to access the portable toilet but can also impact their structural integrity.
When storms hit, our priority is to ensure the safety of our team and the public. We conduct thorough inspections of the units to assess for damage and take necessary steps to repair or replace them as needed. Our teams do their best to ensure all damaged units are located quickly, however, if you come across anything, please let us know.
Planning & Communication
In the face of these challenges, planning and communication are key. We work closely with our clients to understand their specific needs and the unique challenges of their location. This collaborative approach allows us to ensure that our services are delivered smoothly and efficiently.
Effective communication with event organizers, construction managers and local authorities is crucial to overcoming obstacles and maintaining the highest standards of service. By fostering strong partnerships and maintaining open lines of communication we can anticipate potential issues and address them proactively.
