Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Sanitation
The beauty and access to nature in Muskoka can be a blessing often overlooked. Paying attention to, and caring for our environment, should be an important part of everyone’s lives. A little bit of thought and a few actions can create many long lasting and beneficial impacts. Having a sustainable and eco-friendly sanitation company can be influential and inspiring. Here are some important aspects to consider when requiring sanitation services.
Saving Water
Freshwater is a precious commodity that is regularly taken for granted. 97.5% of the earth’s water is saltwater. This means that many regions, worldwide, don’t have the means to access safe freshwater. Whether this is due to pollution, overuse or climate change, water is a resource that should be used sparingly and with great thought.
Events
The average person flushes about 6-7 times a day. The regular toilet uses around 1.6 gallons of water per flush. This number can fluctuate depending on the age and condition of the toilet. If there are 500 people at a 2 event, there will be approximately 10,000 gallons of water saved. This also takes into account the little bit of water put in the units during cleaning.
Flushing Units & Sinks
Flushing portable restrooms and sink stations are becoming more common. These units use what is called a recirculating tank. Although they use a bit more water to fill than the basic portable restroom, the water is consistently being reused. This conserves water and still allows the luxury of a flushing toilet and a place to wash your hands.
Construction
One basic portable toilet can service up to 10 people for a regular work week. Using the same type of calculations as the event section, one portable toilet with 10 people using it will save approximately 700 gallons of water during a regular work week. Not only do these units save water, but they also give contractors access to the proper sanitation facilities.
Safe Waste Disposal
Improper restroom amenities and waste disposal plays a big part in diseases such as cholera, typhoid, polio, and intestinal worm infections. Drug resistant pathogens are one of the world’s top health concerns and the spreading of antimicrobial resistance is intensified through untreated waste. Because of this, it is crucial to keep and dispose of waste in a proper manner.
Portable Restrooms
Portable restrooms provide a safe method of containing waste until it can be properly disposed of. The units must be serviced and cleaned regularly to ensure that proper sanitation standards are maintained. Once the waste is removed, it is transported to a wastewater treatment plant.
Septic Systems
Septic systems contain and treat waste through filtration and decomposition. These systems are sensitive and are not chemical friendly. This reduces the amount harmful chemicals being used and released back into nature. They also encourage conservative water usage to not overwhelm the tank.
Although these systems treat the waste, the solids will still be required to be relocated to a wastewater treatment plant. As the system is used, the decomposition process will not be fast enough to prevent a buildup of waste. These solids should be pumped out every 3-5 years.

Wastewater Treatment Plants
These treatment plants are designed to help speed up the natural waste filtration and purification process. This process consists of two main components. The first section works similarly to a regular septic tank. The waste is screened, and the solids naturally sink to the bottom. The second section allows more time for bacteria and microorganisms to decompose and break down the waste into harmless biproducts.
Conclusion
Treating harmful bacteria and conserving water is an effective way to care for our environment. Whether you are renting a portable restroom or having your septic pumped, Call of the Wild is a company that values eco-friendly and sustainable sanitation. Keeping Muskoka beautiful should be important to all!
