Understanding Island Portable Toilets

When working on an island, it’s important to think about providing clean bathroom facilities for workers. Portable toilets are a great option because they are convenient and hygienic without needing a permanent set up. In this blog, we’ll look at the straightforward but effective system of portable toilets for construction that is being completed on islands, focusing on their three main parts: the shell and the two cubes

Key Parts

The Shell

The shell is the main structure of the portable toilet. It provides privacy and protection from the elements for the user. Typically made from durable materials like high-density polyethylene, the shell is lightweight yet robust, ensuring it can withstand harsh weather conditions and frequent use. The shell is designed to be easy for transport and placement, which is crucial for remote or temporary construction sites.

The Cubes

The heart of the island portable toilet system lies in its two cubes. These cubes are responsible for waste collection and are cleverly designed to be both functional and easy to maintain. Each cube is used alternately, ensuring that there is always a clean and ready-to-use waste collection system in place.

Each cube is essentially a self-contained waste holding tank. When one cube is in use, the other serves as a backup, ready to be swapped out when necessary. This system guaranties that there is minimum disruption to the toilet’s availability, even when maintenance is being performed on the used cube.

Transport & Maintenance

Transporting and maintaining the cubes is a straightforward process, but it requires regular attention to ensure the system functions effectively and hygienically.

Transporting the Cube

The lightweight design of these cubes allows for easy handling by one or two individuals, depending on their usage frequency. We, at Call of the Wild Sanitation, recommend bringing the cube over to the landing the night before the scheduled cleaning. This is because some of our technicians begin their day in the early morning hours and it is not feasible for them to wait for the renters to transport the cube from the island.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Once a week, the contractor is responsible for bringing the used cube to the landing for cleaning. This is an important step as it ensures the portable toilet remains sanitary and pleasant to use. The first cube is cleaned and serviced, ready to be used again, while the second cube takes over its duty on the island. Please note that if the cube is not at the landing when our technician arrives, they will move on.

Importance of Regular Servicing

Regular servicing of the cubes is not just about cleanliness; it’s also about maintaining a pleasant environment for workers. The scent packets that are added to each cube will help manage odors and maintain a fresh-smelling toilet. However, these scent packets only last about ten days, making it essential to adhere to the weekly cleaning schedule.

Because of the smaller capacity of the cubes, they are more likely to freeze during the colder months. Regular maintenance helps keep the right balance of brine and waste, preventing any potential damage.

Best Practices

To ensure that the island portable toilet system operates smoothly and efficiently, here are some best practices for contractors and site managers:

Use One Cube at a Time

It’s recommended to use one cube at a time within the shell. This practice ensures that there is always a backup cube available, minimizing downtime and maintaining convenience for users.

Bring the Cube Over the Night Before

We strongly suggest that renters transport their used cube to the landing at the end of the workday prior to the scheduled cleaning day. This will ensure that your weekly cleaning is not missed, and the toilet continues to be a comfortable experience for everyone on the island.

Use a Tote Box

A simple and effective way to transport the cube is to use a tote box. Placing the cube in a tote will help maintain hygiene and prevent spills and messes during the transportation process. This will make it more efficient and safer for the workers involved. (Please note that we do not provide tote boxes.)

Conclusion

Island portable toilets are an easy and effective way to provide clean bathroom facilities in remote or temporary areas. By knowing the key parts – the outer shell and the two cubes – and the need for regular servicing, contractors can keep the toilets clean, safe and comfortable for their workers.

These portable toilets show how good design and careful planning can solve the problems of providing sanitation in hard-to-reach places. By following our recommended practices, contractors can uphold high hygiene standards, making sure their construction site remains a productive and enjoyable place to work.
